HySpeed H2 Mega-Project

UK Hydrogen Mega-Project Unites Industry Giants to Spark 24,300 Jobs and Lead Clean Energy Revolution

Creating 24,300 UK Jobs and Unlocking £6.5Bn of Private Investment

Project HySpeed is a 1GW green hydrogen project that can accelerate decarbonisation, create thousands of new jobs, and unlock growth across the UK.

By 2030, we estimate HySpeed can deliver:

Investment

>£6.5 billion
of private investment unlocked

Jobs

24,300
new green jobs created

Emissions

1-Mtonne
of CO2 emissions reduction per year
Project HySpeed will deliver private investment, new long-term manufacturing jobs, and provide a quicker and cheaper near-term decarbonisation solution for the UK’s foundation industries such as steel, glass production, and construction materials.
The Project is a strategic partnership between UK-based companies, from FTSE100 to SMEs, including hydrogen technology manufacturers, foundation industries and energy companies. We are united in our vision that hydrogen is a major economic and job creation opportunity for the UK, and this is why HySpeed has a commitment to 50% domestic content.
Project HySpeed represents a £6.5 billion private investment, which is expected to stimulate an additional >£4.9 billion in private investments across the UK’s power and equipment manufacturing sectors.

How It Works

1

Reducing cost of green hydrogen

Creating cheaper green hydrogen through aggregated procurement of equipment and services, optimised power procurement, and low-cost financing.

2

Industrial decarbonisation

Strategically located hydrogen production hubs will support local ecosystems and inject hydrogen into the gas grid to enable UK-wide industrial decarbonisation. Industrial gas end users will purchase certificates for renewable hydrogen to decarbonise their operations without the need for large-scale investments to transition to new technologies.

3

Embedding manufacturing jobs for generations

The growth of green hydrogen production, combined with the rollout of low carbon chemicals, glass, construction materials, as well as hydrogen buses will scale-up and embed manufacturing jobs in high-value net zero technology within our economy.

Benefits for Hydrogen Producers

Long term secured demand from bankable offtakers will enable debt financing of the project.
The diversity of offtakers guarantees demand security.
Producers can concentrate on generating the most cost-effective hydrogen without needing to co-locate with consumers.

Benefits for Industrial Gas Users

There is no requirement for on-site hydrogen production, saving valuable space.
End users achieve decarbonisation goals faster without the need for complex infrastructure upgrades and capital investment.
Electrification limitations imposed by grid connections are avoided.
